🚨 Watchlist Update: Multiple Buy Levels Triggered

Two stocks from our Top 10 Breakout Watchlist last week have already reached their recommended buy levels. Here’s a quick rundown:

GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. (NASDAQ: GFS) has broken out of a falling wedge pattern and cleared our buy level of $50.10. The stock closed at $50.17 β€” with an intraday high of $50.99 β€” holding just above the breakout level.

Super Micro Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMCI) pushed out of a symmetrical triangle pattern and crossed our buy level of $44.40, hitting an intraday high of $44.59 before pulling back to close at $43.69 β€” a session gain of +4.2%.

Bottom line: Use trailing stops to lock in early gains and let the winners run. And now, on to today’s featured setup…

We flagged ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: ON) in our Top 10 Breakout Watchlist last week β€” and the stock has since broken out powerfully on a +6% single-session surge and looks headed even higher.

As we’ll get to just ahead, the combination of a newly restructured acquisition that’s cheaper and expected to boost profits right away, fast-growing demand from AI data centers, and a fresh technical breakout makes ON one of the more interesting setups on the board. Here’s what’s going on…

The Themes Behind the Move

ON Semiconductor β€” which does business as onsemi β€” is a Scottsdale, Arizona-based chipmaker that designs and manufactures power semiconductors, analog and mixed-signal chips, and image sensors through three segments: its Power Solutions Group, Analog and Mixed-Signal Group, and Intelligent Sensing Group. Its products sell into automotive, industrial automation, AI data center, computing, and robotics end markets.

In plain English, whenever an electric vehicle needs to move power efficiently from its battery to its motor, a factory robot needs to “see” its surroundings, or an AI data center needs to deliver enormous amounts of electricity to power-hungry servers without wasting it as heat, there’s a good chance onsemi’s chips are doing that work. Its business hinges on the pace of EV and industrial demand, how quickly it wins content in next-generation AI data-center power systems, and its ability to execute on its pending acquisition of Synaptics.

ON’s latest move reflects a powerful confluence of developments β€” strategic, commercial, and financial β€” that have come together in rapid succession to fundamentally reframe the company’s near-term growth trajectory.

Theme / Catalyst What Happened Why Traders Care
Cheaper, all-cash Synaptics deal On October 1, 2026, onsemi amended its June agreement to acquire Synaptics for $123 per share in cash β€” approximately $5.7 billion, versus approximately $7 billion under the original stock-based deal. Management now expects the deal to be immediately accretive to adjusted (non-GAAP) earnings per share upon closing β€” meaning it should add to profits per share right away. Per the SEC filing, funding combines cash with committed Morgan Stanley financing of up to $2.45 billion in senior secured term loans. FTC approval is complete, and the company still sees $200 million in annual run-rate cost savings. Paying roughly $1.3 billion less β€” and in cash rather than new shares β€” means existing shareholders don’t get diluted. Needham estimates the revised structure avoids issuing roughly 57–58 million shares and adds about $0.50 of incremental adjusted EPS in 2028. A cheaper deal that boosts earnings from day one is a far easier story for investors to own.
AI data-center power growth + new product launches Management expects AI data-center revenue to more than double in 2026, double again in 2027, and exceed $2.5 billion annually by 2030 β€” roughly 50% annual growth. Its Q2 disclosures flagged an expanded role in NVIDIA’s MGX platform (NVIDIA’s modular blueprint for AI servers) plus new platform wins. On September 16, onsemi launched its Embedded Power Platform, delivering 3–5Γ— higher power density depending on the application β€” and Subaru agreed to evaluate it for future EVs. On September 22, Valens announced a collaboration to build connectivity directly into onsemi’s automotive image sensors. AI data centers are adding a fast-growing new leg to a business long tied to autos and industrial demand. These are management projections, and the Subaru deal is an evaluation rather than a production order β€” but new platform wins and product launches are exactly how future revenue gets built.
Sector tailwinds As AI data centers shift to higher-voltage power designs β€” including 800-volt architectures and megawatt-scale server racks β€” demand is rising for chips that convert, protect, and manage power efficiently. That sits right in the sweet spot of onsemi’s silicon, silicon carbide (SiC), and gallium nitride (GaN) power-chip portfolio. Management estimates a $213 billion addressable market by 2030 across automotive, industrial, AI infrastructure, and emerging applications. The AI power buildout broadens onsemi’s demand base beyond the auto and industrial cycle that weighed on results earlier this year. EV demand, customer inventories, and SiC competition remain offsets, but AI infrastructure gives the company a structural growth driver that doesn’t depend on car sales.
Improving results + ambitious 2030 model Onsemi’s Q2 2026 results showed revenue of $1.60 billion (~+9% YoY), adjusted operating margin of 20.8%, and free cash flow of $425.4 million β€” roughly 4x the prior year β€” while the company repurchased $332 million of stock. It ended the quarter with $3.51 billion in cash plus $350 million in short-term investments (Q2 investor presentation). At its September Investor Day, management laid out a 2030 model targeting 12%–14% annual revenue growth, a 53% adjusted gross margin, a 38% operating margin, and about $3.5 billion in annual free cash flow β€” for a company currently valued at roughly $33 billion. Free cash flow is the fuel for buybacks, debt paydown, and the Synaptics deal β€” and it’s surging. Q2’s improvement gives the long-term targets near-term credibility, though delivery against those 2030 goals remains the key test.
Analyst coverage Among the 23 analysts covering ON over the past three months, the average 12-month price target sits at $105.58, with a high target of $150.00 β€” implying roughly 24% upside from the $84.89 close, and as much as 77% at the high end. Recent analyst actions have turned more constructive: on October 2, Wells Fargo raised its target from $85 to $100 (Overweight) and Needham reiterated its Buy with a $116 target, following Seaport Global’s Buy initiation at $100 on September 23. Coverage is still divided β€” Benzinga’s tally shows 10 Buy and 11 Hold ratings, and Truist, Stifel, and Mizuho all cut targets in mid-September. But the October revisions came right after the revised deal, suggesting sentiment is turning. Notably, the average target lines up almost exactly with our PT1 of $105.
Market conviction signal On October 2, ON surged +6.01% to $84.89 on roughly 22.91 million shares β€” one of its heaviest volume days in months β€” clearing both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages in a single session. Options activity skewed heavily toward calls: OptiView data showed 35,138 calls versus 11,337 puts (a put/call volume ratio of 0.32), with about $19.26 million in call premium traded versus $3.19 million in puts. The most active contracts included October $90 calls and longer-dated January 2028 $110 calls. Heavy volume on a breakout day signals buyers absorbing supply rather than sellers simply stepping aside. Call-heavy flow doesn’t by itself prove directional buying β€” and the session coincided with a broad tech rally after a weak jobs report β€” but the combination of volume, options interest, and a deal-driven catalyst points to real conviction behind the move.
Upcoming triggers Traders are watching Q3 earnings, expected around November 2 (an estimated date, not yet company-confirmed), where onsemi has guided to revenue of $1.65B–$1.75B and adjusted EPS of $0.81–$0.93 β€” both above Q2 levels. Other milestones include the Synaptics shareholder vote and remaining international approvals (dates TBD), progress on the Subaru evaluation and any production awards, and the deal’s targeted mid-2027 close. A staggered set of catalysts β€” a near-term earnings test, deal milestones, and potential new customer wins β€” each capable of independently moving the stock through the rest of 2026 and into 2027.

Put it all together, and ON is looking less like a chipmaker stuck in an auto-and-industrial downturn and more like a cash-generating power-chip leader with a cheaper, immediately accretive acquisition, a fast-growing AI data-center business, and a near-term earnings test on deck.

The story is getting stronger, but the chart is what could determine whether this move has more room to run in the near term. Here are the bullish technical signals traders should be watching now.

Bullish Technical Signals

#1 Falling Wedge Breakout (Daily): ON spent more than three months inside a falling wedge (purple lines on the daily chart). It ran from the early-summer highs near $133 down to a mid-September low around $66, with each leg lower covering less ground than the last. That narrowing is the point of the pattern: sellers kept pushing price down but had less and less force behind each push. Price first slipped above the upper trendline in late September. On Friday it followed through decisively with a +6.01% session to $84.89 on 22.91M shares, one of the heaviest volume days in months. That volume matters because it shows buyers soaking up supply rather than sellers simply stepping away. The next test sits just overhead. Friday’s high of $86.45 stalled right below $87, a level that capped the July–August congestion. A daily close above it would confirm that the breakout has cleared its first real supply zone.

ON – Daily Chart

#2 Price Above 50-Day and 200-Day SMAs (Daily): Friday’s surge carried ON above both its 50-day SMA ($76.65) and its 200-day SMA ($80.45) in one move. A breakout that clears short- and long-term trend gauges together carries more conviction than one that climbs through them a step at a time. The averages themselves need a caveat. The 50-day still sits below the 200-day, so this is not a golden-cross alignment. The 50-day is a lagging remnant of the summer selloff, and it has only just stopped falling. Still, the two averages are now less than $4 apart, and that convergence often comes before the 50-day turns up and crosses back over. In practice the averages form tiered support: the 200-day near $80 is the first line of defense, and the 50-day near $77 is the second. Price is now about 11% above the 50-day after Friday’s jump, so a pullback toward the 200-day is the more disciplined entry.

#3 Bullish ADX and DI (Daily): The directional read is decisive. +DI at 37.67 sits more than 23 points above –DI at 14.20, so buyers clearly control direction. The more telling detail is the ADX line itself. At 16.02, it has climbed from a compressed base below –DI and now sits between the two DI lines. A reading below 20 means the trend is still young, which is the useful part. ADX is turning up from a low level instead of rolling over from a high one, and that is the configuration that usually marks a new trend forming, not an old one running out of energy. If ADX pushes through 20 and toward 25 while +DI holds its lead, the wedge breakout becomes a confirmed trend. Combined with the volume behind Friday’s breakout, the daily momentum signals all agree.

#4 Bullish Aroon (Daily): Aroon Up (orange) is at 100%, its maximum, while Aroon Down (blue) has dropped to 14.29%. A 100% reading means ON set a fresh 14-day high in Friday’s session, which is consistent with the breakout. The 14.29% reading on Aroon Down means the most recent 14-day low came 12 sessions ago, which matches the mid-September wedge bottom. Put simply, the stock is making new highs while its last low fades further into the past, which is the textbook definition of a developing uptrend. The two lines are about as far apart as they can get, which shows strongly one-sided participation. Aroon also confirms the structure in #1: the September low marked the end of selling, not a pause in it.

#5 Above Support Area With Price Above 50-Week and 200-Week SMAs (Weekly): The weekly chart shows why the daily breakout has a firm footing. Price has bounced from the pink dotted support area at $72.57. This level capped rallies through much of 2024 and in early 2026, and it has now turned from resistance into support. Levels that switch roles like this tend to be ones the market keeps respecting. The bounce came from more than one level. The 50-week SMA ($75.41) and 200-week SMA ($70.81) both sit within a few dollars of that horizontal line, so several supports overlap in one zone. Wicks from the September low briefly dipped below the zone, but price recovered quickly, which reads as sellers being shaken out rather than a real breakdown. Unlike the daily chart, the weekly averages are in golden-cross alignment, with the 50-week above the 200-week. That keeps the long-term bull trend intact even after the sharp summer pullback. Last week’s +9.96% candle launched straight from this support cluster, and the daily breakout confirms the same move on a shorter timeframe.

ON stock weekly chart showing bounce off support area with bullish RSI and stochastic

ON – Weekly Chart

#6 Bullish RSI (Weekly): The weekly RSI has moved back above the 50 midline to 52.05 and crossed above its signal line at 46.60, which gives two separate readings that momentum has shifted back to buyers. The context makes this more meaningful. Weekly RSI pushed above 80 during the spring rally and then fell to the low 40s during the summer correction. That fully worked off the overbought condition without breaking down into bearish territory. A recovery from a full reset like that tends to support a lasting move, because the oscillator now has plenty of room before 70 starts to act as a headwind. The line is also rising rather than drifting flat, so momentum is building rather than stalling at the midline.

#7 Bullish Stochastic From Oversold (Weekly): On the weekly stochastic, %K (blue) has jumped to 51.82 after crossing above %D (orange, 25.07) from oversold territory below 20. A crossover from the bottom of the range like this is one of the stronger signals the oscillator gives, and on a weekly chart it carries far more weight than a daily cross would. One caveat on the setting: with a (14, 1, 3) configuration, %K is unsmoothed. That makes it fast and prone to sharp swings, which partly explains the nearly 27-point gap between the two lines. The confirmation to watch is %D following %K above 50 over the coming weeks. Combined with the RSI reset in #6 and the bounce off the support cluster in #5, all three weekly signals point the same way. When the weekly and daily charts agree like this, the setup carries more weight than either timeframe would on its own.

Risks to Consider

Even strong setups can fail, especially in a cyclical, high-volatility chipmaker like ON Semiconductor. A few things could knock the stock off course:

  • A breakdown back into the falling wedge pattern on high volume would invalidate the breakout thesis and could reverse the stock’s overall trend
  • Negative company-specific news, overall weakness in the market, or regulatory changes in the semiconductor sector could trigger a sell-off
  • Acquisition leverage β€” the all-cash structure avoids share issuance but consumes liquidity and adds borrowing, with up to $2.45 billion in senior secured term loans per the merger filing, on top of roughly $4.46 billion in existing debt (though Needham expects post-close net leverage below 2x)
  • Deal execution risk β€” Synaptics shareholder approval and remaining international clearances are still pending, closing isn’t targeted until mid-2027, and the $200 million synergy target must still be delivered
  • Long-term targets versus near-term execution β€” the headline financial goals extend to 2030, and the new power platform’s customer evaluations and addressable-market estimates are not booked sales
  • Automotive and industrial cycle risk plus silicon carbide competition β€” weak EV demand, customer inventory adjustments, and Chinese competition can pressure growth and pricing
  • Valuation and volatility β€” ON trades at roughly 21.8x forward earnings and 54.4x trailing earnings with a beta near 2.0, leaving it sensitive to earnings expectations and reversal risk after a sharp rally
  • Insider selling β€” insider Sudhir Gopalswamy sold 15,578 shares at $80 on October 1 (about $1.25 million), retaining 158,177 directly held shares β€” though the sale was made under a pre-planned 10b5-1 trading plan

The Bottom Line

ON is breaking out of a three-month falling wedge on the daily chart while bouncing off a multi-year support cluster on the weekly β€” a dual-timeframe technical setup that historically signals the start of a sustained move higher.

The fundamental story underneath the chart is just as strong: a cheaper, all-cash Synaptics deal, AI data-center revenue on track to more than double in 2026, and free cash flow up roughly 4x year over year.

Combine that with multiple catalysts staggered through the rest of 2026 and into 2027 β€” Q3 earnings expected around November 2, the Synaptics shareholder vote, progress on the new Embedded Power Platform, and the deal’s targeted mid-2027 close β€” and ON looks like one of the more compelling risk-reward setups on the board right now.

If this is a trade you want to get in on, here’s how we’d play it. Below you’ll find two entry options β€” one on a breakout and one on a pullback β€” with price targets that imply 21%–32% potential upside on the breakout entry and 30%–42% potential upside on the pullback entry, plus the stop-losses we’re using to manage the downside.

Recommended Trade Setup

We’re offering two ways to play this setup. The first is for traders who want confirmation that ON can clear the $87 resistance level just overhead. The second is for traders who’d rather wait for a pullback toward the 200-day SMA near $80 β€” the more disciplined entry flagged in signal #2.

Case 1: On Breakout

Item Detail
Buy Level Above approximately $87.00
Price Target 1 $105.00 β€” Potential upside: 21%
Price Target 2 $115.00 β€” Potential upside: 32%
Timeframe Next 3–6 months
Stop-Loss $77.50 on a closing basis
Trade Invalidation Void if price hits stop-loss before entry triggers

If needed, swipe or scroll sideways to view the full table.

For a risk of approximately $9.50 per share, the target rewards are about $18.00 and $28.00 per share. That makes this roughly a 1:2 and 1:3 risk-reward trade. In other words, the setup offers nearly 2x to 3x more potential upside than downside.

Note on Trade Invalidation: This recommendation stays active as long as the technical structure holds. If ON drops to or below the $77.50 stop-loss before the $87.00 entry triggers, the trade is automatically void β€” the support underpinning the thesis would have broken, and the risk-reward setup would no longer justify entry.

Case 2: On Pullback

Item Detail
Buy Level On pullback to approximately $81.00
Price Target 1 $105.00 β€” Potential upside: 30%
Price Target 2 $115.00 β€” Potential upside: 42%
Timeframe Next 3–6 months
Stop-Loss $70.00 on a closing basis

If needed, swipe or scroll sideways to view the full table.

For a risk of approximately $11.00 per share, the target rewards are about $24.00 and $34.00 per share. That makes this roughly a 1:2 and 1:3 risk-reward trade. In other words, the setup offers nearly 2x to 3x more potential upside than downside.

Happy Trading!

πŸ₯ˆ Almost Made the Cut

Today’s featured trade, ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: ON), was our top pick of several breakout candidates we evaluated. The following two stocks were strong candidates that made it to the final round β€” they came up just short of the top spot, but remain on our watchlist and could be featured soon:

Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: KEYS) β€” The test-and-measurement leader is riding the AI infrastructure buildout, with orders up 56% year over year, a record backlog, and wireline revenue overtaking wireless for the first time as 800G and 1.6T data-center networks ramp. The stock just broke out to an all-time high, but with momentum already stretched heading into its late-November report, a pullback toward the breakout area may offer a better entry.

Lumentum Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: LITE) β€” A key supplier of the lasers and optical components that connect AI clusters, Lumentum more than doubled revenue last quarter as demand driven by co-packaged optics and optical circuit switching continues to outpace capacity. A fresh breakout to record highs keeps the trend firmly intact, though after a roughly 500% one-year run the stock is priced for continued execution β€” making the mid-October OCP Summit and early-November earnings the key checkpoints.
